Beervana: the floor plan

Beervana_frontHere’s our final pre-Beervana share. In late July, we announced the ticket sale date and some tantalizing details about the eighth annual fest; we also unveiled the brewers list and the beer list. Well, The Big Day [Friday 10.14] is almost here. We’ve been advising you to get a game plan. There are 59 tables [31 downstairs, 28 on the second level] hosting breweries and distributors pouring more than 250 beers. There’s unlimited sampling, but you can likely “only” savor about one-eighth of the amazing array; this math “problem” is based on 32ish two-ounce pours, aka four pints [designated drivees may put more mileage on the beerodometer]. So work the beer list and compile your must-haves — but keep an eye peeled and an ear perked for the “you gotta try this!” exultations of your fellow Beervanaites. In the Fall Beer Issue of Motif [on racks and counters and floors now!], local legend Sean Larkin [who will speak at 7:30] offered this advice: “Get off your phones and enjoy everyone’s beer. All the brewers will be working hard to give you their best. Don’t wait in line when you could be drinking someone else’s beer. Have an open mind and try something you normally would not.” Click here to read the entire Q&A. [And click here to read our virtual roundtable with RI brewers, who dish on beer laws, music, new brews — and, yes, Beervana.] [And while we’re piling up the parentheses: check out our updated list of Providence Craft Beer Week events.]

The true obsessives [you know who you are] have been waiting for the last piece of the Beervana puzzle: the floor plan. So here it is:

An updated word to the wise: when we hit “publish” at 9:27 am, tickets were still available — but they will be gone before day of show. Click here to buy ’em now! And Beervana is a “Verified Venue” on Untappd. Check their F-book page for details, if you dare to ignore Sean’s advice re: getting off your phone…

Its hop-forward aroma contains notes of grapefruit, while flavors of pine, citrus, and stone fruit round out this light-bodied ale. Dry hopped With Comet and Azzaca. 4.8% ABV
Farm To Face — Drinking this medium-bodied beer is like biting into a juicy, yet tart, peach. It’s brewed as a pale ale and then fermented for ten months in stainless tanks with house yeast. After primary fermentation, we add pediococcus, lactobacillus, and a whole lot of peaches. Aromas of green apple and graham cracker accompany a lingering peachy finish. 6.2% ABV
Victor 2016 — Victor mashes in two thousand pounds of Pilsner malt with five hundred pounds of Cabernet Franc grapes. It’s then hopped with Hallertau. The beer is fermented first with a strain of wine yeast, then finished with Trappist yeast. Fluxus 2016 — Allagash brews Fluxus yearly to commemorate the anniversary of their first beer sold in July 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for continuous change, and every year a different recipe is brewed under the Fluxus name. In this year’s brew, fresh ginger root is added in the whirlpool. After fermentation, the beer is aged in oak gin barrels. The result is a highly aromatic saison with overtones of ginger and botanicals, a hint of vanilla in the flavor, and a vibrant finish. 8.5% ABV
One T — One T Aromas of citrus, pineapple, and passion fruit meld into tropical flavors that pair nicely with the beer’s lightly hopped body. Maris Otter, Munich malts, and raw wheat balance the floral barrage of Bravo, Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial, Citra, and Galaxy hops. Add to all that a 100% fermentation with Brettanomyces claussenii, a yeast that exhibits itself as ripe fruit rather than strong funk or sourness. One T finishes clean with a pleasant, fruity bitterness. 7.1% ABV

Olde School Barleywine (2014 Vintage) — Fermented with dates and figs, this smooth barleywine has a unique flavor. At about 15% ABV, this beer is a great candidate for aging. Over time, the beer dries out and the pit fruit flavors come forward and the hops recede. 15% ABV, 85 IBUs
Biere de Provence — Inspired by the fields of Provence in southern France, Bière de Provence begins with 2-row wheat and rye malts, and Jarrylo hops. A bounty of herbs, including lavender, bay leaf, marjoram and chervil, gives it a floral and spicy nose. Summertime’s party starter, watermelon, is the star of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of tart juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish is thanks to the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient. The beautiful harmony between salty, sour and sweet will leave you wanting more. 4.5% ABV, 10 IBUs
2015 Backwoods Bastard — Our take on a Scotch-style ale, Dirty Bastard is brewed and then thrown into bourbon barrels and aged until the beer changes into what we have come to love in the Backwoods Bastard. Newburyport Brewing is a new partner at the Isle Brewers Guild

This just in from Newburyport Brewing Company:

Newburyport Brewing Company,  one of the Northeast’s premier award-winning regional craft breweries, today announced its investment in the Isle Brewers Guild (IBG) located at 461 Main Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island. IBG’s $12 million, 130,000 square foot facility is a world-class craft brewery complete with a U.S.-made 100-barrel brewhouse, state-of-the-art packaging lines, tasting room, indoor and outdoor event space, classroom space, and company offices. IBG will have an initial capacity of 60,000 barrels when it opens in late 2016 with room to grow to 150,000 barrels in the coming years.

“We haven’t been able to keep up with demand since the day we first opened our brewery in Newburyport, MA,” stated Newburyport Brewing’s co-founder Chris Webb. “Our IBG partnership is a key solution to our capacity constraints – this sister brewery will allow us to meet growing local demand and expand the reach of our year-round and seasonal offerings in new markets.”

With additional capacity comes territory growth. The brewery recently inked an agreement with C&C Distributors in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, which will distribute Newburyport Brewing’s lineup of award-winning craft beers in mid-October 2016: Green Head IPA, Plum Island Belgian White, Newburyport Pale Ale, Melt Away Session IPA, Das Kölsch, and 1635 Series limited release beers.

“Newburyport Brewing strengthens our portfolio of premier craft beer offerings,” stated Bob Zanella, vice president of sales at C&C Distributors. “Every beer from Newburyport Brewing has impressed our team and I am confident our local Rhode Island craft customers will appreciate the brewery’s commitment to quality and consistency. It’s exciting to have another world-class brewery right here in Pawtucket.”

“We thank our local consumers, retail businesses and musicians throughout the region for helping make this next step in our growth possible,” said Newburyport Brewing’s co-founder Bill Fisher. “IBG will have cutting-edge brewing and packaging technology to ensure that our craft beers continue to meet our high expectations and enable us to innovate. We’re fired up to be part of the Rhode Island brewing community.”

Beervana Fest 2016: the brewers list: updated!

We’re doing a updated repost of our 9.14 entry, with the newly-announced breweries following the initial list. We hope to have the detailed beer list ready for your game planning fun on Wednesday [10.5]. Stay tuned! And stay thirsty, my friends!

Beervana Fest 2016 is happening on Friday, October 14 from 6:30 to 10 pm at Rhodes-On-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston. Have you bought tickets yet for the eighth annual unparalleled beerstavaganza? No?! What are you waiting for?!?! We’ve typed it many times before, and we’ll type it yet again: “It’s not open to debate: it’s simply the best local beer event [the producers of all the other fests would concur if made to swear on a stack on whatever-book-means-the-most-to-them].” And as is the norm, the Beervana brain trust, Mike Iannazzi and Brian Oakley, are topping themselves yet again in ’16: “After the success of the addition of the second floor foyer last year, we’ve decided to expand to the whole second floor! This will spread out the tables, making it less crowded and allow us to invite even more breweries. There will be 60 tables this year [up from 45 last year] and 250+ beers!!!”

Need another push? Here’s a big one: the exclusive unveiling of the list of brewers and distributors who will be sharing their overwhelming array of ultra-rare/exclusive/unique/excellent liquid gold [breweries that weren’t at the fest in 2015 are followed by an asterisk]. Prepare to drool:
